- Laurie King
The original print editions will be launched at the Royal Albert Hall as part of Surrey Arts' Go Surrey concert on the 29 May and will also be distributed around Surrey. A series of projects inspired by the 2012 Olympics. Our ambition is to create work that is both community led and of the highest quality, which is popular and experimental, accessible and challenging.
Giants Picnic and Sports Day - an Inspire Mark project -
Ballyhoo Arts have teamed up with Surrey Arts to offer eight schools in Surrey the chance to take part in an exciting event in celebration of the Olympics 2012 and Surrey’s ancient tradition of Hill Top Picnics.
Each school has worked with Ballyhoo artists over 2 days to make giant processional puppets. The puppets have been constructed and decorated by the children, based on the theme of ‘forgotten histories’ and ‘sporting heroes’.
All the giants and some of the children involved are coming together on Wednesday 23rd May for a celebratory picnic on top of Box Hill, with kind permission from the National Trust. This will involve drama performances with the puppets and a giant sports competition with a medal ceremony.
The giants will also appear at events across the county, in celebration of the Olympic cycle race and torch relay. They will even be making an appearance at the Royal Albert Hall as part of a Surrey music festival.
The schools involved are;
Therfield School, Leatherhead (Senior)
Wonersh and Shamley Green Cof E Infant School
Powell Corderoy Primary School
St Charles Borromeo Catholic Primary School
Holy Family School (Primary)
Wishmore Cross School (Senior Special School)
Auriol School (Junior)
Epsom Downs Primary School
This project has been funded by the P&G Surrey Schools Games, Surrey Arts, Surrey Hills AONB, Arts Partnership Surrey and Surrey County Council Local Committees of Reigate and Banstead, Epsom and Ewell, and Woking, as well as the schools taking part.
